CLERMONT, Fla. - For the second straight day, the Whitworth Pirates got the better of the Tufts Jumbos in college softball action with a 7-2 victory during spring break on Sunday morning.
Makayla Lefever went the distance in the circle for the Pirates and improved to 8-0 this season. She allowed only a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to Jumbo junior 1B Cassie Ruscz. Lefever gave up five hits and no walks while striking out three batters in her eighth complete game of the season.
Tufts squandered a scoring chance in the top of the first. They had singles by senior 2B Christina Raso and sophomore C Raven Fournier to go with a Whitworth error, helping to load the bases with one out. However, the Pirates turned a 5-2-5 double play to end the inning.
Whitworth scored twice in the third on Tufts starter Raina Galbiati to take the lead. Myranda Ramirez doubled home Megan John for the first run. Alyssa White was able to score on a passed ball for the second score.
The Bucs batted around and added five more runs in the fourth inning. Megan John's rbi single scored Michelle Silva. Shannon Wessel came home on a passed ball and John eventually scored on a wild pitch. Chelsey Hayes drove in the final two runs with a single that got through the left side of the infield.
Ramirez finished 2 for 3 with an rbi, while Hayes led the team with two runs driven-in. Hall and John each scored twice.
Galiati (0-1) allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts for Tufts. Freshman pitcher Amolee Hawkins made her first career appearance for the Jumbos and was solid allowing one hit and one run in 2.1 innings. Sophomore catcher Raven Fournier was 2 for 3.
