Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. - Cassie Ruscz singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth and outfielder Michelle Chisdak threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the bottom of the eighth as the Tufts softball team won 6-5 against Salve Regina in Florida on Tuesday.
With the game tied 5-5 heading into extra innings, Ruscz hit a one-out single which scored Carrie Copacino from third. In the bottom of the eighth, Salve had runners on second and third with no outs. Chisdak caught Lindsey Florent's fly ball and threw Lindsay DelGrego out at the plate for a double play. With a runner on third and two outs, Tufts sophomore pitcher Raina Galbiati got a ground ball to end the game.
The Jumbos had led 5-1 after scoring four times in the top of the fourth inning. Senior 2B Christina Raso led the game off with a single and stole second. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Raven Fournier. Run-scoring doubles by Christian Cain and Samantha Siciliano powered the Jumbo fourth.
The Seahawks had got on the scoreboard in the third when Francesca Galeazzi led off with a triple. She scored on a bunt single by Nikki Bukovsky. Amanda Riley started their three-run fourth with a solo home run. Galeazzi doubled home a run and scored on a wild pitch making it 5-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, Salve's O'Riley hit a one-out double. Pinch runner Melissa Figueiredo took third on a Tufts error and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Lexi Soucie.
Tufts was out-hit 10-7 in the win. Junior RF Shelby Lipson was the only Jumbo with two hits. Galbiati got the win in relief allowing just one hit and no runs in 1.2 innings. Freshman starter Amolee Hawkins went 6.1 innings allowing nine hits and five runs.
Kelsey Boarman took the loss for the Seahawks (1-3). She allowed seven hits and six runs (four earned) in eight innings. Galeazzi finished 3 for 4 with two runs and an rbi, while Florent was 2 for 5 atop the Salve batting order.
