INDIAN WELLS, CA - The Tufts men's tennis team started NESCAC play with a strong 7-2 win over Colby College Thursday during their spring break trip in California.
The Jumbos are 5-1 on their trip heading into the final match at Redlands on Saturday. The loss dropped the Mules to 1-7. Tufts was ranked sixth in the Northeast region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association at the end of the fall and Colby was 18th.
Tufts took two out of three in doubles with some different pairings. Nick Cary and Jay Glickman teamed up for an 8-1 win in the #2 spot. Zain Ali and Justin Brogan got together for the first time and won 8-4 at #3. Colby's Carl Reid and Shaw Speer won #1 doubles 9-7 against Jumbos Nik Telkedzhiev and Griffin Brockman.
The Jumbos had the first two wins in singles to go up 4-1. Rob Jacobson (6-3 record for 2015-16) defeated Mark HoSang 6-1, 6-2 at #3 and Ethan Chen debuted this spring with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Nam Le in the sixth match.
Reid defeated Telkedzhiev at #1 6-3, 7-5, pulling the match to a 4-2 score. However, Jumbo sophomore Zain Ali (6-4) sealed the win with a 6-1, 6-4 final against Speer on the fourth court.
Tufts followed up with wins by #5 Garrett Weinstein (2-1) 7-5 and 6-1, and by Jay Glickman at #2 6-1, 0-6, 7-6. Glickman improved his season singles record to 11-2.
Colby returns home and will play at Amherst on Sunday.
