Box Score MEDFORD - Sophomore LF Samantha Siciliano hit a two-run double tying the game in the fourth and a two-run home run in the sixth for the go-ahead runs as the Tufts softball team came from behind for a 7-5 win over Bowdoin in the NESCAC East opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Spicer Field.
The Jumbos trailed 5-1 early, but senior pitcher Erica County settled down in the late innings and Siciiliano provided the offensive heroics. She finished 3 for 4 with four rbis and two runs scored. Tufts improved to 8-6 overall.
Bowdoin (9-7-1) was led by two rbis from senior pitcher Julia Geaumont and two hits apiece from senior 1B Katie Gately and freshman RF Caroline Rice.
After both teams went down 1-2-3 in the first, Bowdoin struck for three runs in the second. Geaumont roped a two-run double in an inning that was aided by two Jumbo errors. Tufts got one back in the bottom of the seventh also helped by a miscue as sophomore DH Michelle Chisdak hit an rbi single. Rice threw out a runner trying to score at the plate on the play keeping it a 3-1 game.
Polar Bear sophomore CF Jordan Gowdy singled to lead off the third, stole second and scored on another Tufts error. Gately also delivered an rbi single that inning to extend the Bowdoin margin to 5-1.
The Jumbos narrowed the gap to 5-3 in the third as senior 2B Christina Raso and Siciliano both singled. After they advanced a base on a wild pitch, freshman SS Christian Cain scored a run with a sac fly and junior 3B Summer Horowitz delivered the other with a base hit.
Tufts rallied to tie the game with two outs in the fourth. Junior CF Carrie Copacino walked, Raso hit another single, and Siciliano roped a double past the center fielder scoring both to make it 5-5.
County would allow just two hits and a walk in the fourth through seventh innings after a shaky beginning. Then in the home sixth, Siciliano hit her two-run, two-out, line-drive home run putting Tufts in front 7-5. Both runs were unearned as a Bowdoin error extended the inning.
Gately singled with one out in the Bowdoin seventh, but Rice blistered a line drive that was caught by Cain and turned into a double play to end the game.
County allowed six hits and five runs (three earned) while improving to 6-2. Raso was 2 for 4 with two runs at the top of the Tufts order and Horowitz finished 2 for 4 with an rbi. Copacino scored twice.
