Jumbo Women's Crews Rebound from Saturday Losses with Amherst Sweep on Sunday

Senior Abby Perelman coxed the 2nd varsity eight

MALDEN - Tufts University women's crews returned to the water Sunday morning, one day after their duals with nationally-ranked Bates, Wellesley, and Wesleyan. The Jumbos faced their NESCAC counterpart Amherst.  Under brilliant sunshine, but  cold and windy conditions, the varsity and 2nd varsity eights from Medford swept the two-race card against the visitors from the middle of the Commonwealth.

The Tufts 2nd varsity eight started the morning's racing with an impressive wire-to-wire turnout against the visitors, conquering the wind and the waves with an overall time of 7:59.9 to Amherst's 8:17.0.  The Jumbos appeared to handle the conditions better than their opponent, and in the last 500 meters especially, looked to be slicing through the wind with great ferocity.

The varsity eights race proved to be more of a test for both crews. The race was close for the first 500 meters and the two crews clashed oars briefly in the middle of the course after crossing out from beneath the Route 16 bridge. Amherst hung on tenaciously, and refused to let the Jumbos go, until the crews reached the William A. Shoemaker Boathouse at the 1,300-meter mark. From their Tufts slowly moved away and eventually opened up a lead of a length with 500 meters to go. The margin remained the same to the finish, with the Jumbos crossing the line in 7:26.36, with Amherst crossing the line in a time of 7:30.17.

Tufts returns to the water next Saturday against Middlebury on the Malden River. Racing begins at 9:15 am, and it will be Senior Day, where the Tufts Rowing Community will honor the members of the class of 2016. Next Sunday, all the crews will travel to Worcester for the Brown and Baker Cups Races against WPI, with additional crews from William Smith, Skidmore and others.
