Women's Varsity Eight Races 6th at New England Championships

MEDFORD - With eight of the top 10 teams in the USRowing / Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division III poll in action, the Tufts women's crew varsity eight placed sixth at the 2016 New England Rowing Championships Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond.

Tufts was second in its heat, finishing less than three seconds behind defending varsity eight champ and #1 in the nation Bates. The Bobcats crossed the finish line in 6:48.404 and the Jumbos in 6:50.963. Tufts' time was the third best in the heats and earned them a spot in the six-team grand final.

Racing against Bates, #2 Williams, #3 Wellesley, #4 Wesleyan, and #6 Trinity in the grand final, the seventh-ranked Jumbos were sixth with a 7:03.380 time.

The Jumbos also made the grand final in the third varsity eight women's races. They were third in the heats with a 7:35.635 time, then took sixth in the grand final (7:56.726).

In the women's point trophy standings, which combine all boats, the Jumbos placed seventh out of 29 with a 47.12 score.

The Tufts second varsity eight placed third in their heat at 7:14.605 to qualify for the petite final. There they were third of six finishing in 7:38.665.

Tufts also had a boat in the novice four, which did not advance out of the heats after a 9:33.263 time.

The Jumbos will return to Worcester next Sunday (May 8) for the National Invitational Championships on Quinsigamond.
