WORCESTER - The Tufts University women's crew varsity eight placed seventh overall and fifth in NESCAC during racing at the National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) on Lake Quinsigamond Sunday.
The Jumbos failed to qualify for one of the six spots in the grand final with their 7:16.741 heat time. They were 0.462 behind second-place Trinity (7:16.279) in their heat, with the top two going to the grand final. The Jumbos won the petite final at 7:24.723, earning them seventh of 21 teams overall in varsity eight racing. They were ahead of Hamilton, Colby, and Connecticut College in NESCAC. Williams College won the varsity eight race and NESCAC title with a 7:19.183 time in the grand final.
The Jumbo second varsity eight placed ninth overall. They were fourth in their heat at 8:19.957, putting them in the petite final. There they were third of six with a 7:42.109 mark. Wellesley's second varsity eight won the race (7:18.559).
Based on these finishes, Tufts is unlikely to earn a berth into the NCAA Championships when they are announced on Monday night at 7 pm.
Tufts' third varsity eight placed seventh on Sunday. They had an 8:45.188 in the heats, then won a three-boat petite final with a 7:51.194 finishing time.
In the women's team point standings, accounting for all racing, the Jumbos finished eighth out of 21 teams at the NIRC.
