Six Goals For Field Hockey In Season Opening Win at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Tufts University had three goals in each half and had six different players score in a 6-2 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference field hockey Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.

The Jumbos were opening up the season, while Colby dropped to 1-1 overall.

The opening 20 minutes were evenly played, but Tufts exploded for three goals in a span of 4:11 to go up 3-0. Gigi Tutoni scored at 25:09 of the first half when she scored right in front off an assist from Rachel Hamilton.

The Jumbos made it 2-0 off a penalty corner by Mary Kate Patton. Nicole Arata took the pass from Patton and ripped a shot that Patton deflected into the cage at 27:14.

Dominique Zarrella made it 3-0 at 29:20 off a pass from Tutoni.

Colby made it 3-1 at halftime off a penalty corner. Kaleigh Hoffman did the stop on the corner and pushed the ball over to Merrill Read after Colby faked a shot attempt. Read quickly flicked the ball high into the left corner of the cage.

Tufts added a penalty corner goal of its own at 6:21 of the second half. Mary Travers took the corner and went short to Artz, who ripped a low shot for the score.

The Jumbos made it 5-1 on another penalty corner score by Celia Lewis with 19:47 left in the game. Marguerite Salamone took the corner and had the lone assist.

The penalty corner goals continued when Colby's Kallie Hutchinson took a direct corner pass from McKayla Blanch. Hutchinson was straight on from the goal and blasted a low shot with 7:16 remaining.

Travers picked up her second assist of the game on a final penalty corner goal. Erin Sanders scored with four minutes to play.

Emily Polinski made five saves in 66 minutes for the Jumbos, while Samantha Ward played the final four minutes.

Riley Whitmyer made five saves in 42:15 for the Mules and Emily Buckman played her first college minutes with five stops over 27:45.

The Jumbos will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to take on Babson at 6 pm.
