WATERVILLE, Maine -- Tufts University had a 14-3 shot advantage in the game, but the most important shot was a penalty kick for the lone goal of the game in a 1-0 victory over Colby College in NESCAC women's soccer Saturday.

Emma Ranalli scored a penalty kick goal for the win

The Jumbos move to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Mules were playing their season opener under new head coach Kristin Shaw.

Tufts received its penalty kick with 5:20 left in the first half. Emma Ranalli scored her first of the season with the goal. The Mules fell behind and lost first-year goalkeeper Dani Lonati on the play. Lonati hurt a shoulder while diving and was forced to leave the game.

The Jumbos had a 9-2 shot advantage in the first half and held the Mules to one shot in the second half. Colby did have all three on net and forced Emily Bowers to make three saves for the shutout. Bowers has not let a goal past her throughout the first two games of the season.

Lonati made two saves before leaving the game, while Sam Rizzo stopped five shots the rest of the way for Colby. The Jumbos also had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

Tufts travels on Wednesday to play non-conference Lesley at 8 p.m. for the last away matchup before an eight straight home games. Colby adventures to Husson tomorrow for a 1 p.m. duel.
