Volleyball Finishes Perfect MIT Invitational With Wins Over Brandeis and Regis

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Tufts volleyball team finished up play in the MIT Invitational on Saturday, taking on Brandeis and Regis at MIT, and beating both teams for a perfect 4-0 invitational record. Senior co-captain Elizabeth Ahrens and freshman Kelly Klimo were named to the All-Tournament team.

The host Engineers were the invitational winners because they went 4-0 without dropping a set, and the Jumbos finished second with a perfect 4-0 record and a 12-2 win/loss set record.  With the two wins today the Jumbos move to 5-0 on the season.  

The Jumbos started the day with a 3-1 win over Brandeis.  After dropping the first set to the Judges, 25-18, the Jumbos came back to win the next three sets, 25-18, 25-14, 25-12, to take the match, 3-1.  Freshman Brigid Bell led the Jumbos with eight kills while senior McKenzie Humann added six, as did Ahrens. Ahrens finished with five blocks to add to her kills and freshman Christina Nwankpa added five kills and five blocks to the win.  Sophomore Angela Yu took care of the setting, finishing with 24 assists.  Senior Mary Maccabee finished with five kills and a team-high ten digs.

In their second match of the day, the Jumbos picked up a three set win over Regis, 25-12, 25-20, 25-12.  Maccabee led the Jumbos with 13 kills, as freshman Heather Holz added six kills and Nwankpa turned in five. Nwankpa added three blocks to her efforts.  Yu took care of the setting, finishing with 24 assists and helped with six digs.  Klimo added six digs as well, and Bell finished with a team-high ten digs.

The Jumbos will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Roger Williams for a 7 pm start in Cousens Gym.
