Box Score MEDFORD – Senior forward Gaston Becherano scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, during a 3-0 victory over visiting Bates Saturday afternoon at Bello Field in Medford, Massachusetts. The Jumbos have now won five consecutive home openers, dating back to 2012.
Junior midfielder Dexter Eichhorst posted a three-point game, with a goal and an assist, while senior goalkeeper Scott Greenwood (1-1-1) earned his first victory and shutout of the season. The Weymouth, Massachusetts, native has 28 career shutouts, which is a program record.
The Jumbos (1-2-1, 1-0-1 in NESCAC) were awarded a penalty kick in the ninth minute. Becherano stepped up to the line, and fired a low shot by Bobcats sophomore goalkeeper Robbie Montanaro (2-2-1).
The Jumbos controlled the pace of play throughout the game, which included a 16-1 advantage in shots in the first half and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Montanaro made 11 saves in the contest for the Bobcats (2-2-1, 0-2 NESCAC).
The Jumbos extended their lead to 2-0 in the 84th minute, when Becherano found the back of the net off a feed from Eichhorst. Eichhorst ended any hope of a Bobcats' comeback in the 88th minute, as he found the back of the net assisted by freshman midfielder Jack Delaney.
The Jumbos held a 38-3 advantage in total shots, while holding a 15-1 advantage in terms of corner kicks. The Jumbos committed 12 fouls in the contest, while the Bobcats were guilty of six infractions. The matchup was physical at times, as the Jumbos were disciplined with a pair of yellow-card bookings and the Bobcats were issued one.
The Jumbos were led on the offensive end by Becherano (five shots, three on goal), freshman midfielder/forward Gavin Tasker (six shots, three on goal), junior midfielder Tyler Kulcsar (four shots, two on goal), junior midfielder Kevin Halliday (three shots, two on goal), junior midfielder Christian Zazzali (two shots, two on goal), freshman forward Joseph Braun (three shots), freshman midfielder Zach Lane (four shots) and freshman midfielder Brett Rojas (three shots).
The Jumbos will host Plymouth State Sunday at 2:30 p.m., and then the squad will be back on the road for a 7 p.m. matchup against Brandeis next Saturday. The squad will end the September portion of its schedule with a game against visiting Wesleyan University on Tuesday (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m.
