NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine – Senior captains Tim Nichols and Luke O'Connor finished first and second overall, respectively, for the Tufts University men's cross country team in its season-opening meet Saturday, as the Jumbos finished second overall out of four teams at the Bates Invitational at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine.

Bates finished first overall with a team score of 115, as the Bobcats placed five runners in the top-eight overall. The Jumbos posted a runner-up finish with a score of 171. WPI finished the day in third overall with a score of 196 and Southern Maine finished fourth with a score of 397. In this meet, each school's top-10 runners were counted toward overall team scores.
Nichols posted a time of 25:11.9 on the 8-kilometer course, while O'Connor finished right behind him with a mark of 25:34.9. Sophomore Dylan Jones finished 11th overall, while being the Jumbos' third-place finisher with a time of 26:50.2 Sophomores Andrew Doherty Munro (26:54.7) and James Gregoire (27:07.6) were the team's fourth and fifth-place finishers, respectively, as Munro placed 14th overall and Gregoire finished 18th overall.
Junior Sam Little finished in 20th overall (27:16.0), senior Michael Caughron finished 23rd overall (27:24.3), sophomore Tom Doyle finished 24th overall (27:25.4), sophomore Rory Buckman finished 28th overall (27:36.3) and sophomore Colin Raposo placed 30th overall (27:37.4).
Sophomore Brian Djerf (27:48.0), sophomore Hiroto Watanabe (27:55.4), freshman Michael Carnavos (27:56.4), junior John Greenberg (28:10.3), freshman Taylor Wurts (28:12.3), sophomore Christian Swenson (28:40.6), sophomore Kyle Anderson (29:29.4), senior Chris Warren (29:29.7), junior Tom DePalma (29:47.1) and junior Christopher Gregory (30:55.3) all competed for the Jumbos.
The Jumbos will be back in action next Saturday, as they will compete in the Purple Valley Classic at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The team will open up the October portion of its schedule at the Paul Short Invitational on Oct. 1, which will be held at Lehigh University.
