No. 20 Men's Tennis Suffers Third 5-4 Loss of Season Saturday at the Hands of No. 8 Wesleyan

MEDFORD, Mass. – The No. 8 Wesleyan University (Conn.) men's tennis team utilized a 4-2 advantage in singles action during a back-and-forth 5-4 triumph over No. 20 Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, on Saturday.

Rohan Gupte was victorious during No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.

The Jumbos (5-5, 2-3 in NESCAC) have been involved in four matches that have ended with a 5-4 score in 2017, as the squad has lost three of them. The Cardinals kept their perfect conference record intact, as the squad improved to 9-1 overall and 4-0 within the NESCAC Conference.

The Jumbos took an early 2-1 advantage in doubles action, as juniors Rohan Gupte and Zain Ali emerged victorious during the No. 1 flight with an 8-5 win over seniors Jake Roberts  and Michael Liu. Freshman Zach Shaff and senior captain Ben Battle were solid at the No. 2 slot, outlasting junior Tiago Eusebio and sophomore Maxwell Smith, 8-6.

During No. 3 doubles, juniors Steven Chen and Cameron Daniels handed juniors Danny Coran and Griffin Brockman an 8-2 setback.

On the singles side, Chen downed Ali in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, at the top slot. Gupte fought his way to a three-set triumph over Liu at the No. 2 slot, as the Las Vegas native won the first set, 6-4, and then suffered a 6-2 setback in the second. He won the decisive third set, 6-2.

Coran was resilient at No. 3 singles, as he fell in the opening set, 7-5, to Eusebio, but then responded with a 6-4 second-set win. Coran was victorious in the decisive superbreaker by a mark of 10-6.

Sophomore Joachim Samson earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Shaff at the No. 4 slot, and Daniels outperformed freshman Nathan Niemiec, 6-4, 6-3, in No. 5 singles action. At the No. 6 slot, freshman Princeton Carter prevailed over senior captain Kevin Kelly, 6-4, 6-1.

The Jumbos will be right back at it on Sunday with a 1 p.m. tilt against conference-rival and No. 9 Williams in Medford, Massachusetts.
