No. 19 Men's Tennis Improves to 2-1 in NESCAC Conference with 5-4 Victory at Trinity Sunday

HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore Ethan Chen of the No. 19 Tufts University men's tennis team improved to 4-0 in singles action during the 2017 season on Sunday, as the Jumbos outlasted NESCAC Conference rival Trinity (Conn.), 5-4, in Hartford, Connecticut.

Ross Kamin posted a straight-set victory during No. 6 singles.

The Bantams (4-4, 0-2 in NESCAC) started the match strong, as they took two out three doubles matches. Seniors Rutendo Matingo and William Boyd came away with the upper hand in No. 1 doubles, as the duo defeated juniors Griffin Brockman and Rohan Gupte, 8-4. 

Junior Kyle Scheffers and senior Jagger Riefler proved to be the superior pair during No. 2 doubles, outperforming freshman Zach Shaff and senior captain Ben Battle, 8-5. 

The Jumbos (5-3, 2-1 in NESCAC) claimed a crucial victory during No. 3 doubles, as sophomore Ross Kamin and freshman Nathan Niemiec downed senior Phillip Winser and freshman Courtland Boyle, 8-3. 

The Jumbos made up ground on the singles side, by claiming four out of six matches. Matingo was victorious at No. 1 singles for the Bantams, as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over junior Danny Coran

Niemiec improved to 4-2 during singles-oriented matches in 2017, as he defeated Boyd in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, during No. 2 singles. Scheffers and senior captain Kevin Kelly squared off during No. 3 singles, with Scheffers earning a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-2. 

The Jumbos had the last say during No. 4, 5 and 6 singles, as Chen raced out to a 6-1 victory in first-set action against Riefler during No. 4 singles. The Weston, Massachusetts, native had to dig deep during the second set, but ultimately prevailed, 7-5. 

Freshman Benjamin Biswas defeated Winser, 6-2, during the first set of No. 5 singles, but Winser responded with a back-and-forth 7-6 (3) win during the second set. Biswas regrouped and dominated third-set action with a commanding 6-0 triumph. During No. 6 singles, Kamin defeated sophomore Chris Caskin, 6-3, 6-0. 

The Jumbos will be back in action on Sunday, April 9, as they will take on Middlebury in Middlebury, Vermont, at 11:30 a.m.
