No. 20 Men's Tennis Ends Three-Game Losing Streak with 6-3 Triumph over No. 28 Bates Thursday

MEDFORD, Mass. – Junior Danny Coran and freshman Nathan Niemiec recorded two-win performances, respectively, for the No. 20 Tufts University men's tennis team during a 6-3 NESCAC Conference triumph over No. 28 Bates in Medford, Massachusetts, on Thursday.

Danny Coran earned a victory at No. 3 singles for the Jumbos.

The Jumbos (6-6, 3-4 in NESCAC) held advantages in individual- and team-oriented events, as the squad won two out of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches against the Bobcats (4-9, 3-3 in NESCAC). Junior Ben Rosen led the way for the visitors, earning a pair of victories.

The Bobcats were victorious during the No. 1 doubles flight, with senior Chris Ellis and Rosen besting juniors Rohan Gupte and Zain Ali, 9-8 (5). The hosts fired back with 8-5 triumphs at the No. 2 and 3 slots, as sophomore Ross Kamin and Niemiec defeated senior Pat Ordway and junior Adam Schwartz.

Senior captain Ben Battle and Coran starred at the No. 3 flight, downing junior Josh Leiner and sophomore Josh Quijano.

The Bobcats also claimed a victory during the top slot on the individual side, as Rosen compiled a straight-set triumph, 6-1, 6-2, over Gupte. Ali was playing a top-notch brand of tennis at the No. 2 slot, outdoing Ellis, 6-2, 6-2.

Coran did not have an easy path to victory at the No. 3 slot, but he did show some resiliency, as he won the opening set, 6-2, and then suffered a difficult 7-5 setback to Quijano in the second. The Milwaukee native edged Quijano, 7-6 (3), for all the marbles in the third.

Niemiec was perfect at the No. 4 slot, going undefeated during a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Schwartz. Sophomore Ethan Chen squeezed out a pair of last-minute victories at the No. 5 slot, outperforming Ordway, 7-5, 7-5.

During No. 6 singles, freshman Jacob Kauppila grabbed a victory for the Bobcats, outdoing senior captain Kevin Kelly, 6-1, 6-3.

The Jumbos have four regular-season matches remaining on their schedule, starting with matches against Hamilton (9 a.m.) and Coast Guard (4 p.m.) on Saturday in Medford, Massachusetts.
