Zain Ali of No. 16 Men's Tennis Posts Match-Clinching Win at No. 2 Singles in 6-3 Win at Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Nathan Niemiec posted a 2-0 performance for the No. 16 Tufts University men's tennis team during a 6-3 win over No. 19 Brandeis University on Friday in Waltham, Massachusetts, as the Jumbos have now won four consecutive matches by a combined score of 30-6.

Junior Danny Coran posted a straight-set win during No. 3 singles.

The Jumbos (9-6, 4-4 in NESCAC) went 4-2 in singles action and 2-1 on the doubles side against the Judges (12-8). With the match sitting at 4-1 in favor of the Jumbos, junior Zain Ali clinched the match for the visitors at the No. 2 singles slot, winning second and third sets by marks of 6-1 and 6-4, respectively, after dropping the first set, 6-2, to senior captain Brian Granoff.

Junior Rohan Gupte and Ali fell short during the No. 1 doubles flight to senior captain Michael Arguello and senior Ryan Bunis, 8-5. Sophomore Ross Kamin and Niemiec answered with an 8-4 triumph over Granoff and sophomore Jackson Kogan at the No. 3 slot.

The Jumbos closed out doubles action with another victory, as freshman Zach Shaff and senior captain Ben Battle outperformed freshman David Aizenberg and sophomore Tyler Ng, 8-4, during No. 2 doubles action.

Sophomore Ethan Chen opened up singles competition with a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set victory over senior Jeff Cherkin at the sixth slot. Junior Danny Coran excelled in the clutch at the No. 3 slot, as he defeated Arguello, 6-4, 7-5, giving the Jumbos a commanding 4-1 lead.

Immediately after Ali clinched the match at the No. 2 slot, Niemiec bested freshman Mitchell Ostrovsky, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 5 slot, extending the Jumbos lead to 6-1.

The Judges emerged victorious in the final two matches. Ng defeated Shaff, 6-3, in opening-set action during No. 4 singles, and then Shaff responded with a 6-4 second-set triumph. Ng ended up winning the match, as he held a 4-1 lead in the decisive third, and then Shaff was unable to continue competing, due to injury.

Bunis grabbed a hard-fought victory at the No. 1 slot, defeating Gupte, 7-5, in the first. Gupte made sure the match went the distance, winning the second, 7-5, and then Bunis outlasted Gupte, 14-12, in the superbreaker.

The Jumbos will conclude their regular-season schedule on Saturday, with a tilt against No. 7 Bowdoin at 3 p.m. in Brunswick, Maine.
