No. 7 Williams College Outlasts No. 16 Men's Tennis during 5-4 Thriller on Saturday in Maine

BRUNSWICK, Maine – With the match tied at 4-4, junior captain Kyle Wolfe of the No. 7 Bowdoin College men's tennis team rattled off a come-from-behind, three-set victory during No. 3 singles action, as he clinched a 5-4 victory for the Polar Bears over No. 16 Tufts University on Saturday in Brunswick, Maine. 

Rohan Gupte won at the No. 1 singles and doubles slots on Saturday.

The Jumbos conclude their 2017 regular-season slate with a 9-7 overall record and a 4-5 mark in the NESCAC Conference. The Bears (15-3, 6-2 in NESCAC) have one regular-season match remaining against visiting Wesleyan (Conn.) on Sunday at noon. 

The Jumbos claimed an early 2-1 lead in doubles action, as juniors Rohan Gupte and Zain Ali held serve at the No. 1 slot, defeating junior Luke Tercek and sophomore Grant Urken, 8-5. Freshman Zach Shaff and senior captain Ben Battle bested Wolfe and sophomore Yangeng Jiang, 8-4, in the second slot. 

The Bears refused to be shut out in doubles action, with junior Gil Roddy and freshman Justin Patel posting an 8-4 win against sophomore Ross Kamin and freshman Nathan Niemiec at the third slot. 

Gupte and Tercek also meant in No. 1 singles action, as the match was a back-and-forth battle. Gupte won the first set, 6-4, and then Tercek ran away with a 6-1 victory in the second. Gupte did not let the second-set setback hold him back, as he posted a 6-4 win in the do-or-die third. 

Urken and Ali squared off at the second slot, as Urken cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set triumph. Shaff posted a 6-1 win over Jiang in first-set action at the fourth slot. Jiang stole the momentum with a 6-1 triumph in the second, but then Shaff reclaimed his magic with a 6-2 win in the third. 

Roddy did not waste any time at the fifth slot, outperforming Niemiec, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Luke Carstens stood the test of time at the sixth slot, claiming a three-set victory, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, over sophomore Ethan Chen

Junior Danny Coran earned a 7-5 win against Wolfe in the opening set at the No. 3 slot, but then Wolfe swung back with a 7-5 win in the second. He then cruised to a 6-1 win in the must-win third, clinching the match for the hosts. 

Next on the agenda for the Jumbos will be the NESCAC Championship on Friday, May 5 – Sunday, May 7, at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
