Box Score MEDFORD, Mass. – The Tufts University Men's Soccer team scored two goals in the second half of Sunday's game to beat Trinity College 2-0 at Bello Field.
The game-winner came in the 66th minute when Jumbo sophomore Gavin Tasker played the ball on the ground from the middle of the field to a charging Zach Lane who sent the ball bouncing into the bottom left corner of the net.
Tufts (4-0-1, 2-0-1 NESCAC) wasn't done there as they added to their lead in the 83rd minute. Senior Matt Zinner had the ball on the right side from about 25 yards out. He found teammate Dexter Eichhorst right outside the box who hit a curling ball into the left side of the net past diving Bantam goalie Mateo Zabala.
Both goal scorers recorded their first goal of the year for the Jumbos. Tasker added an assist to his two goals so far this season to lead the team in points at five.
One could almost feel a goal coming at the beginning of the second half as the Jumbos got seven shots off in the first eight minutes. Tasker sent a couple of shots wide left from the top of the box and Brett Rojas sent one wide right off a cross from the right side. In the 51st minute sophomore Joseph Braun flicked a ball over his shoulder to freshman Max Jacobs. Jacobs met the ball at a run, a Trinity defender fell down, and Jacobs brought the ball into the box before sending it high over the crossbar.
After peppering the goal with shots, the Jumbos finally broke through in the 66th minute with Lane's goal.
The best chance for Trinity came in the 86th minute as Michael Burns struck one from the top of the box that was headed for goal before Jumbo goalie Conner Mieth picked up his second save of the day as he dove to his left and deflected it out of bounds for a Bantam corner.
Tufts held the advantage in shots 20 to three, setting a season high. They also had an edge in corners kicks, four to two.
Trinity plays again on Wednesday when they host Endicott College. The Jumbos don't play again until Friday when Brandeis University comes to Medford.
