Women's Squash Picks Up Convincing Seaon-Opening Win Over Wesleyan

CAMBRIDGE – The No. 19 Tufts women's squash team opened their 2018-19 season this weekend, picking up a 9-0 win over No. 20 Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Harvard. 

Junior Claire Davidson won a hard fought battle in the #1 spot

The match was the season opener for the Jumbos, who are now 1-0.  The loss was also the season-opener for the Cardinals, who are now 0-1.

Junior co-captain Claire Davidson took the courts in the top position, and played the closest match of the day.  After winning the first two games against Aditi Prasad, she fell in the second two games.  But, Davidson came through when it counted, and won a tightly contested fifth game for the win, 11-5, 11-7, 9-11. 8-11, 12-10.   

In the second position, sophomore Julie Yeung faced off with Ananya Vir and after a close first game, Yeung won the next two games by a much bigger margin (14-12, 11-2, 11-5).  Senior Zarena Jafry took on Natasha Feenstra in the third spot and won in three games, 11-8, 11-7, 11-4. 

Sophomore Rachel Windreich faced off with Nina Premutico in the fourth spot and was able to pick up a three game win for the Jumbos, 11-4, 14-12, 11-7.  In the fifth spot senior Hannah Burns took on Alessandra Lampietti, and Burns needed just three games to get a win for the Jumbos, 11-3, 11-4, 11-3.  Making her collegiate debut, Megan Chen allowed her opponent to score just four points as she won over Alexandra Imperiale, 11, 1, 11-2, 11-1. 

Taking the courts in the seventh position rookie Diya Sanghi picked up her first collegiate win, downing Annie roach, 11-6, 11-2, 11-6.  In the eighth position senior Sahana Karthik won over Emma Smith, 11-5, 11-0, 11-5.  Rounding out the Jumbos lineup was senior co-captain Chista Irani, who won in three games, allowing Sofia Melian-Morse to score just seven points across three games (11-2, 11-4, 11-1). 

The Jumbos are back in action on Sunday when they take on Colby at 10 am.  Wesleyan plays again on Friday, November 30 when they face off with William Smith at 7 pm.
