MEDFORD – Junior Roger Gu swept the freestyle sprint events including a pool record as the Jumbo men's swimming & diving team won 168-89 over Middlebury College in their season-opener at Hamilton Pool on Sunday.
Gu and fellow NESCAC champion and All-American Kingsley Bowen won multiple events as Tufts had the best marks in 15 contests against their NESCAC opponents. Gu swam a pool-record 20.60 in the 50 freestyle, while also winning the 100 free (47.41) and the 200 free (1:43.90). Bowen posted victories in the 100 backstroke with a 51.28 time and in the 50 butterfly with his 23.35 finish.
That pair also joined juniors Matthew Manfre and Costantino Camerano for a 200 medley relay win (1:34.07) to lead off the meet. Manfre added an individual first in the 50 breaststroke (27.75) as Tufts' returning All-Americans contributed significantly to the victory. Senior tri-captain Brandon Jinn was also heard from, winning the 1,000 freestyle with a 9:54.46 touch.
Jumbo newcomers also made an impression in their first collegiate meets. Freshman Nate Tingen took the 50 backstroke in 24.88 seconds, freshman Joseph Kim was excellent in posting the best 500 freestyle time (4:46.48) and freshman Tar Tar Jarusinchai was the fastest in the 200 individual medley (1:55.99). He also anchored the 400 freestyle relay that was led off by freshman Victor Vollbrechthausen and included returning All-American Tyler Tatro along with senior Adon Shapiro. Their 3:15.57 finish was the best.
Junior Alex Burnham in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.18) and sophomore Lomax Turner in the 100 butterfly (52.09) also had top performances for the Jumbos.
Tufts is off until November 30 when they begin the MIT Invitational weekend.
