CAMBRIDGE – Competing in two events on the first night of the MIT Invitational Friday, the Tufts University men's swimming team posted two runner-up performances in the 800 freestyle relay and the 1,650 freestyle.
Tufts' foursome of freshman Joseph Kim, sophomore Tyler Tatro, sophomore John Koster and junior Roger Gu swam 6:48.29 in the 800 free relay to trail only MIT. The Jumbos also had the fifth-place foursome with sophomore Lomax Turner, senior tri-captain Kingsley Bowen, senior Noah Cagley and senior Ross Wood putting together a 6:59.27 finish.
Three of the top four times in the 1,650 free came from Tufts swimmers. Sophomore John LaLime was the runner-up with an NCAA B cut time of 16:14.92, senior tri-captain Brandon Jinn took third in 16:31.23 and junior Tommy Gillespie touched fourth (16:34.50).
Tufts did not enter anyone in tonight's three-meter diving event.
The Jumbos lead the team point standings after one night. They have 256 to host MIT's 233. Six teams were in action overall.
Saturday's first session of the MIT Invitational starts at 10 am. The night session begins at 5:30 pm.
