| Roger Gu broke his own 50 free record tonight |
CAMBRIDGE - Junior Roger Gu swam a school record in the 50 freestyle to highlight Saturday's performances by the Tufts University men's swimming & diving team at the MIT Invitational.
On day two of the event, the Jumbos competed in nine events on Saturday night. Gu broke his own previous 50 free record of 19.95 set last year. Senior tri-captain Kingsley Bowen also finished first overall in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.47 seconds.
The Jumbos are in second place out of six teams with 1,100 points, while first-place MIT has 1,154.5 points. Third-place RPI has a 693.5 score.
Tufts participated in the 200 freestyle relay finals sending out JJ Batt, Gu, Bowen and Costantino Camerano who together posted a time of 1:23.14 and scored a second-place finish. In the 200 butterfly finals the top Tufts finisher was Trevor Serman placing ninth clocking a 1:55.08. Tyler Tatro (1:43.05) and Gu (1:43.16) placed third and fourth respectively in the 200 freestyle.
In the 100 breaststroke, Alexander Burnam finished with a 58.51 time which was good for fifth overall. Tar Tar Jarusinchai (58.77) placed one spot behind Burnam. One of the Jumbos' best events was the 400 individual medley where Joseph Kim placed first improving on his preliminary time with a 3:59.95 time in the finals. Michael Gregorace (4:07.51) placed fourth behind Kim in the event.
In the 400 medley relay, the Jumbo four of Nate Tingen, Burnam, Bowen and Gu came in third with a cumulative mark of 3:24.93. Austin Pruitt had a final score of 226.20 in the one-meter diving event for sixth place.
The Jumbos will return on Sunday for the first session of the MIT Invitational that begins at 10:30 am. The night session will start at 5:30 pm.
