Gu, Kim Win Again as Men's Swimming & Diving Wraps Up MIT Invitational

Freshman Nate Tingen was a part of the second-place 200 medley relay

CAMBRIDGE – Junior Roger Gu and freshman Joseph Kim won evens to headline Tufts University men's swimming & diving's performance on the third and final day of the MIT Invitational Sunday.

On Saturday, Gu broke his own Tufts record in the 50 freestyle by swimming a 19.77 to win the event at MIT. Today he repeated as a winner in the 100 free with a time of 44.44 seconds in the final. Both times are NCAA B-cuts.

Kim was also a double-winner at MIT this weekend. On Saturday he was first in the 400 individual medley (3:59.95), while today he was first in the 200 backstroke with a 1:48.28 time. Both of those times are also NCAA B-cuts. He was also fourth in today's 200 IM (1:54.36).

Gu was also a part of the 200 medley relay which finished as the runner-up at the meet on Sunday. He anchored a foursome that included freshman Nate Tingen, junior Matthew Manfre and senior tri-captain Kingsley Bowen. They combined on a 1:31.10 time in the final that is an NCAA B-cut.

Sophomore Tyler Tatro added a second-place showing in the 500 freestyle. His 4:41.34 mark in the final finished in front of Jumbo senior tri-captain Brandon Jinn's 4:43.26 for fourth place.

Tufts had two of the top foursomes in the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay. Tatro, Bowen, freshman Tar Tar Jurisinchai and Gu touched in 3:04.12 for second place. Another foursome of sophomore John Koster, Tingen, sophomore Lomax Turner and freshman Victor Vollbrechthausen timed 3:08.54 for fourth place.

Junior Alexander Burnam added a fifth-place in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.10). His faster preliminary time of 2:07.46 had been fourth in that session. Jurisinchai was fifth in the 200 IM with a 1:54.47 finish. Bowen was also entered in Sunday's 200 backstroke and posted a 1:50.96 mark in the prelims.

With a score of 1,886 points over the three-day meet, Tufts finished second out of six teams. Host MIT won with a 2012 score. RPI was third at 1021 points.

The Jumbos close the semester with a quad-meet at Wesleyan with Williams and WPI next Saturday.
