CAMBRIDGE – After picking up three wins in doubles play, the Tufts men's tennis team held on in singles action to top MIT, 6-3, on the road on Saturday afternoon to open up the spring portion of their 2017-18 schedule.
With the win the Jumbos are 1-0. MIT falls to 2-2 with the setback.
Senior Rohan Gupte and classmate Zain Ali played a hard fought battle at number one doubles, edging the MIT pair of Tyler Barr and Alex Cauneac, 8-6. At number two doubles the Jumbo duo of freshman Carl-Herman Grant and senior Ben Battle picked up an 8-6 win over MIT
Sean Ko and Michael Zhao. The Jumbos swept doubles play with freshman Boris Sorkin and sophomore Ethan Bershtein earning an 8-5 win over the Engineer's Albert Go and Victor Cheng.
In singles play Ali picked up another win for the Jumbos, downing Cauneac at number two singles, (6-1, 6-4). Sorkin was also able to win again for the Jumbos, beating Ko in the third singles match (7-6, 6-3). The final Jumbo win came at number six singles, as sophomore Ben Biswas earned a close win over Zhao (6-2, 2-6, 10-5).
Battle took on Cheng at four singles, but fell in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 6-2). Senior Danny Coran faced off with Go at fifth singles, but wasn't able to win (6-3, 6-1). Gupte rounded out the Jumbos singles lineup in the number one spot, but Barr picked up a win by default in that position.
The Jumbos are back in action on Saturday when they take on Connecticut College at Arizona State at 12 pm as part of a spring break trip where they will play four matches out west. MIT takes the courts again when they host Middlebury on Saturday with a 10 am start.
