Box Score
CLERMONT, Fla. - Senior 2B Samantha Siciliano, freshman CF Emma Della Volpe and sophomore LF Maria Ostapovich led Tufts University to a 12-1 softball victory over the College of Wooster on Sunday afternoon. Including Saturday's 13-2 victory against Clarkson, this was the Jumbos' second straight run-rule victory.
Siciliano was 2 for 2 with three runs scored and an rbi at the top of the Tufts line-up. Batting second, Della Volpe finished 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Ostapovich added a 2 for 3 day with two rbis and two runs scored. Senior Raina Galbiati added a pinch-hit two-run home run in the top of the fifth. The Jumbos finished with 14 hits.
Freshman pitcher Kristina Haghdan was the beneficiary of the offensive support, though she didn't need all of it. She pitched five innings for Tufts allowing five hits and one unearned run with four strikeouts and a walk. She retired 10 of the final 11 hitters she faced.
For the second time already this week, Tufts hit two triples in an inning. They did it against Clarkson on Saturday with Siciliano and senior Raven Fournier, and again in the second inning versus Wooster today. Ostapovich led off the inning with a triple and then Siciliano hit her second triple in as many days to bring home the run. She then scored on a single by Fournier (1 for 3, run, rbi). With four triples in three games, Tufts already has more than the two they hit all of last season.
The Jumbos broke the game open with six runs in the top of the fifth. Before Galbiati's home run, Ostapovich hit a two-run single scoring sophomore Maggie Lebinski and senior Sara Willner-Giwerc. Junior SS Christian Cain singled home a run and scored earlier in the frame.
Haghdan allowed a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth, but got the next two Fighting Scots to end the game by the run rule.
Emmalee Cook had a pair of singles to lead Wooster. She knocked in their lone run in the second with a base hit scoring Alexis Bauer, who had reached by fielder's choice. Haghdan stranded the bases loaded in that inning to prevent further damage.
The Jumbos (3-0) play again right away versus Carroll University (Wis.) Sunday afternoon. Wooster (4-6) plays a pair tomorrow starting against Calvin at 2 p.m.
