Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman starter Kristi Van Meter went the distance and a five-run third inning highlighted the offense as the Tufts softball team had its best win of its spring trip thus far, 10-3, over 10th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW) on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore 3B Jamie Stevens went 2 for 4 with three runs and an rbi, while freshman SS Mia Steinberg finished 2 for 4 with three rbis and a run for the Jumbos. Senior 2B Samantha Siciliano was 3 for 4 at the top with a run and rbi, and sophomore DH Maggie Lebinski was 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run.
Outside of the fifth inning, when she allowed two doubles and a home run, Van Meter (4-1) was strong for the Jumbos. Her complete game included six hits and three runs allowed with five K's and three walks.
Tufts knocked returning Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year Bella Matthias out of the game in the third. The Jumbos scored three in the first, two unearned, as Siciliano led off with a triple and scored on an error. Steinberg later delivered a two-run base knock.
In the five-run third, consecutive doubles by Steinberg and sophomore 1B Casey Maggiore powered the Jumbo attack which included rbi singles by Lebinski and Siciliano. With reliever Dani Biesiada in, Stevens doubled home a run in the fourth to put Tufts up 9-1. She would later hit a solo home run in the sixth to cap the win.
UWW had scored a single run in the third. Megan Schweitzer walked, stole second and then scored on a single by Mallory Klotz. In the fifth, Klotz hit a two-run shot after Caitlin Catino hit a two-out double.
Matthias allowed seven hits and seven runs (four earned) in her 2.1 innings for the Warhawks, who were playing their first game of the season. Klotz (2 for 4, 3 rbis, run) and Catino (2 for 3, run) led the UWW bats.
Now 8-2, Tufts has games against New Paltz and Wellesley on Friday. Wisconsin-Whitewater will see New Paltz and Plymouth State tomorrow.
