Softball Loses Spring Break Finale to Wisconsin-Whitewater 6-3

Box Score

CLERMONT, Fla. – Megan Schweitzer was 5 for 5, stole two bases and scored a pair of runs to help lead the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team a 6-3 win over Tufts University on Sunday morning in Florida.

Mia Steinberg doubled and scored in the fourth

The game was the last of the week for the Jumbos, who finished their spring break trip with an 11-4 record. The Jumbos, who had just five hits in the game, were led by sophomore CF Maggie Lebinski at 2 for 3 with a run and an rbi.

Schweitzer led off the game with a single, stole second and eventually scored on a walk to give the Warhawks (5-3) a 1-0 lead. The Jumbos evened it up as senior catcher Raven Fournier scored unearned in the second. She led off with a walk and came all the way around to score on an infield error.

A lead off-single and a wild pitch put UWW's Mallory Klotz in scoring position early in the third. She would score on a base hit by Julia Camardo as the Warhawks took the lead back 2-1.

UWW would take charge with four runs in the fourth, three unearned. Schweitzer started it with a one-out single and stolen base. She scored on a single by Emily Rux. The next three runs scored on a pair of errors by the Jumbos to put the Warhawks ahead 6-1.

Tufts was unable to mount much offense against Camardo, who improved to 3-0 in the pitcher's circle. However, they did get two in the fourth to cut the gap to 6-3. Freshman SS Mia Steinberg doubled and scored on a single by Lebinski. After stealing second, Lebinski came around on a double by freshman RF Reegan Coleman.

Camardo would limit the Jumbos to just one hit over the final three innings. She went seven full, giving up five hits and three runs (one earned) with three K's and a walk.

Klotz finished 2 for 4 with two runs for UWW, while Meg Cohrs joined Camardo with two rbis. The win was a measure of revenge for the Warhawks, who lost to Tufts 10-3 earlier in the week.

Freshman Kristina Haghdan (3.1 IP, 9 H, 3 ER) took the pitching loss for the Jumbos. Classmate Kristi Van Meter came on in relief in the fourth and allowed just two hits and no runs in 3.2 innings.

Tufts is scheduled to open its NESCAC East season at home next Friday against Bowdoin. UWW remains in Florida and will play Kalamazoo and Williams after a day off on Monday.
