Softball Defeats Babson 9-6 in Game 1, 4-4 Tie in Game 2 to be Continued

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MEDFORD – Junior LF Krissy Caporelli had three rbis in the Tufts University softball team's 9-6 game-one victory over Babson College on Tuesday at Spicer Field. Game two, called due to darkness with the score tied 4-4 after seven innings, will be continued at a later date.

Edie Huling had two hits, scored two runs and made a nice running catch in game one

Babson scored three times in the top of the sixth to tie the second game at 4-4.

Tufts, which had 11 hits in the second game including three by sophomore 3B Jamie Stevens, improved to 19-6 with the game-one victory. Babson, led by senior Erica Pavlo with two doubles and a home run on the day, is now 18-10.

Pavlo's two-run home run to left-center gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one. Sophomore Jacqueline Paul, who led off the inning with a single, scored before her.

The Jumbos sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five times on four hits, a hit-by-pitch and two Babson errors in the third to take a 5-2 advantage. Junior 1B Sofia Molina, senior catcher Raven Fournier, Caporelli and sophomore RF Maria Ostapovich had rbis.

Tufts added four more in the fourth to lead 9-2. Caporelli's two-run single was in the middle of it, while two more Babson errors aided the cause and Fournier scored on a double steal.

Pavlo led off the Babson sixth with a double and scored on a base hit by sophomore CF Kayla Schinik making it 9-3. The Beavers would then put the go-ahead run on base in the seventh after scoring three times with two outs. Sophomore catcher Tori Roche had an rbi double and sophomore pitcher Katie Gademski added a run-scoring single. However, with the bases loaded, Van Meter got a strike out to end it.

Van Meter improved to 9-2 allowing 14 hits and six runs (three earned) with seven strikeouts and two walks. Freshman CF Edie Huling finished 2 for 3 and scored twice, while Stevens, Molina and Fournier also scored two runs.

Reilly took the loss for Babson, going 3.1 innings allowing seven hits and nine runs (seven earned) with a K and two walks. Pavlo (2 for 2, 2 rbis, run), Gademsky (2 for 2, rbi), Schinik (2 for 3, rbi), Roche (2 for 4, run, rbi) and junior Ashley Tango (2 for 4, run) all had two hits for the Beavers.

Back-to-back rbi singles by freshmen Reegan Coleman and Mia Steinberg in the bottom of the first got the Jumbos going in game two.

Babson got one back when Pavlo hit a one-out double in the fourth and scored on a double by sophomore LF Victoria Casey.

However, Coleman – who had three rbis in the second game – hit a two-run single in the fifth to put Tufts up 4-1.

Jumbo freshman starter Kristina Haghdan had allowed just one run through five innings when Babson began a late rally in the sixth. Paul's rbi single closed the gap to 4-2 and then Casey lashed a two-run double to center tying the game at 4-4. She advanced to third as the go-ahead run, but Haghan got a ground ball out to end the frame.

The Jumbos would put their own go-ahead run on third after senior catcher Sarah Finnigan led off with a single. Haghdan entered as a pinch runner, went to second on a single by Stevens and took third on a wild pitch. However, Babson reliever Brooke Stock left her there with a fly-ball out.

With darkness descending upon Spicer Field, both teams put runners on base in the seventh but did not score. The game was called at the end of the seventh with the coaches agreeing to continue at a later date.

Haghdan went seven innings giving up seven hits and four runs with five strikeouts and four walks. In addition to her three hits, Stevens scored twice in the nightcap. Coleman and Steinberg both had two hits while junior DH Christian Cain scored twice.

Gademski started game two for Babson and went five innings surrendering eight hits and four runs (three earned). Stock pitched two innings of three-hit, no-run relief. Casey went 2 for 3 with three rbis and junior catcher Annie Quine was 2 for 4 with a run.

Tufts plays a pair at Amherst on Saturday while Babson goes to Smith tomorrow for a NEWMAC double-header.
