Softball Sweeps Double-header from Trinity to Clinch NESCAC East Division Flag

Box Score

MEDFORD – The Tufts University softball team used a pair of big first innings to record 9-1 (five innings) and 5-2 victories over Trinity College in NESCAC East Division action today at Spicer Field.

Kelsey Dion was 3 for 3 with three rbis in the second game

Tufts (25-7) clinched their 15th NESCAC East pennant with Saturday's game-two victory, improving to 9-2 in the division. Trinity, third in the East at 6-5, is now 17-13 overall. The Jumbos and Bantams play the final game of this weekend series on Sunday at Spicer with a noon start.

The Jumbos scored six runs on six hits and one Bantam error in the top of the first of game one. Sophomore 3B Jamie Stevens hit an rbi double, while freshman 1B Sofia Molina, senior SS Sara Willner-Giwerc and sophomore LF Emily Serata all had rbi singles.

That was more than Jumbo freshman starter Kristi Van Meter would need. She would earn her 12th victory going five innings allowing three hits and one run with seven K's and two walks.

The Jumbos added an unearned run in the second when freshman CF Edie Huling walked and scored on a Trinity error. Junior DH Christian Cain and Serata delivered rbi singles for two more Jumbo runs in the fourth.

Trinity scored its lone run in the fourth. Freshman LF Sam Witmer was hit by a pitch and scored on a base hit by freshman 3B Cassidy Schiff. Trailing 7-1 at the time, the Bantams had the bases loaded with no outs in the inning and only scored that once.

Serata led Tufts at 2 for 3 with two rbis and a run. Huling and Stevens both scored twice, while Cain had two rbis.

Senior Rachael Smith took the game-one loss for Trinity, allowing nine hits and nine runs (seven earned) with a strikeout and three walks in the five innings.

Tufts jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two with all of the runs unearned. A two-run single by junior 1B Kelsey Dion led the way. The other two runs scored on a Trinity error. In the third, Tufts senior 1B Raven Fournier singled to lead off and came around on a double by Dion, who was 3 for 3 with three rbis in the game.

Jumbo freshman starter Kristina Haghdan – who was facing her sister, Trinity senior 1B Katie Haghdan - didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. The Bantams scored twice in that frame, one on a Jumbo outfield error and another on a single by freshman DP Gillian Birk.

Tufts' Haghdan earned the win with five innings allowing two hits and two unearned runs, striking out three and walking three. Senior Raina Galbiati went the final two frames for Tufts and allowed just one hit and no runs. Senior 2B Samantha Siciliano was 2 for 3 with a run at the top of the Tufts order.

Trinity had just six hits on the day. Sophomore Lindsay Pressman was the game-two losing pitcher allowing eight hits and five runs, but only one earned, in six innings. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
