#3 Field Hockey Tops Conference Opponent Wesleyan 8-0 Tuesday Night

Box Score

MEDFORD – Eight goals scored by six different players lifted the No. 3 Jumbos field hockey team past conference opponent Wesleyan, 8-0, Tuesday night at Ounjian Field.

Junior Julia Todesco scored her first collegiate goal in the 8-0 win

With the win the Jumbos remain unbeaten at 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. Tufts will host New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponent Amherst this Saturday with a noon start. Wesleyan falls to 3-4 with the loss, and 0-3 in conference play. The Cardinals will be hosting Hamilton College this Saturday, with an 11 am start.

The Jumbos exploded during the first half, scoring a total of six goals. Some of their opportunities came from penalty corners, as the first two goals were a result of this. Senior co-captain Gigi Tutoni got the Jumbos on the board just four minutes into play, tipping a shot off the stick of sophomore Beth Krikorian. Junior Marguerite Salamone, who takes the majority of Jumbo penalty corners, connected well with Tutoni and Krikorian throughout the course of the game. No less than three minutes later, Krikorian would put another shot on goal. This shot was hit with force, and Wes goalkeeper Delaney Wood was unable to react quick enough, and the Jumbos had a 2-0 lead. Junior Shannon Yogerst had the assist, collecting her third point of the season. This would be the theme of the half, and just a minute later Tutoni scored a goal of her own. Senior Hanaa Malik had the assist.

Time passed, but the pressure didn't stop. Tufts was inching closer to a 4-0 lead, in which they reached midway through the first half. Malik ripped a shot past Wood, Krikorian had the assist, and the Jumbos added on to the lead.  In the 29th minute, junior Julia Todesco scored her first collegiate goal, dribbling up the sideline and striking a ball into the back of the net. Krikorian scored her second of the half in the 31st minute, and the Jumbos had a 6-0 lead at the end of the period.

Starting the second half, freshman goalkeeper Andie Stallman saw her first collegiate action, replacing Emily Polinski in net for Tufts. Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Grant was put in part way through for the Cardinals, to replace Wood. In the 51st minute, Salamone was able to rip a shot past Grant, and the Jumbos found themselves up 7-0. Senior Claire Trilling had the assist. Sophomore Kassidy Rogers-Healion scored her first goal of the season shortly after, with the assist going to Todesco. This would be the final score, and in a downpour the Jumbos were able to defeat the Cardinals 8-0.

Freshman goalkeeper Gabby Guzdek saw nearly nine minutes of action for the Cardinals near the end, and had three good saves. For the Jumbos, freshman goalkeeper Emma Smith also saw her first collegiate minutes. Tufts had a total of 31 shots compared to Wesleyan's 2, while the Cardinals as a team had a total of 13 saves. Penalty corners favored the Jumbos as they had 15 total, while the Cardinals had none.
