Men's Rowing Opens New Year at Green Mountain Head on Sunday

Mats Edwards rowed in both singles and doubles for Tufts

PUTNEY, Vt. – The Tufts University men's rowing team started its 2018-19 season by competing in singles and doubles events at the Green Mountain Head on Sunday.

The three-mile race course goes 1.5 miles upstream, around two large orange buoys and then returns 1.5 miles to the finish (in the same place as the start). A mix of school-affiliated rowers, rowing clubs and independent athletes made up the competition, including some of the sport's top competitors.

In the first race of the day – the 1x U19 – and in his first collegiate race, Tufts freshman Alex Williams had a top 10 finish with a 21:31.7 time.

In the 1x 19-34 age group, Jumbo junior Mats Edwards was the team's top finisher in a 20:56 time for 15th place out of 35. Tufts had 11 men in that race overall.

Edwards later joined Harris Hardiman-Mostow in the 2x Open and they were fourth in a 20:47.5 time.

A total of 17 Jumbos competed on Sunday.

Tufts will return to fall action in two weeks with the Hadley Chase in Western Massachusetts October 14.
