No. 13 Volleyball Picks Up Road Win Over Brandeis Wednesday Night

Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Jennifer Ryan and sophomore Cate Desler turned in ten kills each and the No. 13 Tufts volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over Brandeis on the road on Wednesday evening.

Freshman Jenelle Yarwood finished with three aces, a kill and three digs

The Jumbos improve to 17-0 with the win and remain 6-0 in NESCAC play.  Brandeis is now 4-15 with the setback and remains 1-4 in conference matches.

The first set was the closest of the match and needed extra points to decide a winner.  The Jumbos jumped out to an early lead and led by as many as seven, 17-10.  But the Judges fought their way back into it and tied things at 19.  The Judges then took a one-point lead and were ahead 24-23.  But a kill from Desler tied things at 24 and then a Judge error gave the Jumbos the 26-24 win in set one.

The Jumbos jumped out to a lead in set two as well.  Ahead, 11-7 they got behind the serve of senior Heather Holz and scored four more points.  After a Judge point, the Jumbos scored eight more consecutive points this time behind the serve of senior Rachel Furash to take a 23-8 lead.  They picked up a 25-10 win in set two.

The two teams traded points to start the third set.  With things locked at six a kill from senior Maddie Stewart was followed by two aces from junior Sophia Acker.  A kill from Furash gave the Jumbos a 10-6 lead. The Jumbos held on to that lead and won the third set 25-18.

Desler and Ryan were the offensive leaders for the Jumbos with ten kills each.  Desler added seven digs and Ryan turned in four blocks.  Senior Brigid Bell finished with eight kills and four digs.  Stewart turned in seven kills and four blocks.  Defensively, freshman Stephanie Lee collected 11 digs.  Furash and sophomore Ariel Zedric took care of the setting and Furash finished with 29 assists while Zedric collected five.

For the Judges, Emma Bartlett and Amelia Oppenheimer each turned in seven kills.  Marissa Borgert helped with five kills and five digs.  Defensively Kaitlyn Oh tallied 11 digs.  Borgert ran the offense, finishing with 17 assists.

The Jumbos are back in action on Friday night when they host Springfield for a 7 pm start.  The Judges play again on Sunday when they travel to Cleveland to take on Washington University at 12 pm and NYU at 2 pm.
