Women's Basketball Rolls Past UNE in Cousens Gym Opener Monday Night

MEDFORD – The second-ranked Tufts University women's basketball team had four score in doubles figures in a 31-point, 76-45 victory against the University of New England Monday night at Cousens Gym.

Sofia Rosa finished with 13 points and eight rebounds for Tufts.

The Jumbos (3-0), playing their home opener, were led by 15 points from senior co-captain Erica DeCandido, 13 from sophomore Sofia Rosa, junior Emily Briggs with 11 and 10 by junior Erin Poindexter-McHan. Tufts had huge scoring advantages of 28-12 in the paint, 24-15 off turnovers, 18-7 on second chances and 35-7 off the bench.

UNE (3-1) was paced by 14 points and five steals from sophomore Abby Cavallaro and eight points with seven rebounds by senior co-captain Sadie Nelson.

Tufts took control of this one quickly, outscoring the Nor'Easters 23-9 in the first quarter. The Jumbos forced UNE into 3 for 16 shooting (18.8 percent) in the period while grabbing 21 rebounds to seven by the visitors. DeCandido scored eight points to lead Tufts in the frame.

Cavallaro hit a pair of free throws for UNE at 8:30 of the second quarter pulling the guests within 23-11. However, Rosa had six points during an 8-0 Jumbo spurt that put the hosts up 31-11 with 5:15 on the second quarter clock. The Nor'Easters got the margin down to 16 twice before halftime, including 33-17 on a jumper by senior co-captain Jocelyn Chaput with 3:21 to go. That's as close as they would get for the remainder of the contest though.

Tufts' lead hit 28 points in the third quarter (57-29) on a three by freshman Shea Colby, then got as high as 32 points (67-35) after a steal and a jumper by Colby in the middle of the fourth.

The Jumbos finished +14 in rebounds (47-33) with four players grabbing five or more lead by Rosa's eight. Poindexter-McHan added four assists and three steals to her game. Tufts' high in minutes for the game was 22 by DeCandido as all 13 players who dressed saw action and 11 scored points.

Chaput finished with seven points, six rebounds and two's in assists and steals for the Nor'Easters. Junior Madalyn Sanborn put up six points and pulled down five rebounds.

The Jumbos return to action on Saturday at Brandeis in a 1 pm start. UNE is at Saint Joseph (Maine) on Wednesday at 5:30 pm.
