Men's Basketball Closes Out First Semester Slate With Road Win Over UMass-Boston

Box Score

BOSTON – The Tufts men's basketball team picked up a 71-49 win over UMass-Boston on the road on Wednesday night.  The 49 points is the fewest the team has allowed since the 2014-15 season when they allowed just 49 points in a win over Emerson.

Will Brady led all Jumbo scorers with 14 points Wednesday night

The Jumbos wrapped up the first portion of their schedule with the win and are now 7-2 overall. They do not play again until after Christmas.  UMass-Boston, who beat Division I Holy Cross last night, falls to 5-3 overall after the setback.

Ahead 9-5 about six minutes into play the Jumbos got a layup from sophomore Tyler Aronson and then another from junior Will Brady. Senior Eric Savage then turned in a layup to put the Jumbos ahead by ten, 15-5, eight minutes into the game.  After a jumper from Charlie Mitchell for the Beacons, freshman Dylan Thoerner and Brady made layups for the Jumbos and then another from Savage put Tufts ahead by 14 with 9:04 left in the half. Brady followed that with a layup about 30 seconds later to increase the lead to 16.

The Beacons stopped the Jumbos scoring run with a jumper from Mariano Rodriguez, and then Mark Munroe made a layup and Michael Boyd turned in back-to-back jumpers to cut the Jumbo lead to eight with 4:57 left in the half. Boyd added a layup to bring the Beacons within six with 3:22 remaining. The two teams traded baskets and Brady gave the Jumbos a nine-point lead, 30-21, going into the break with a three with three seconds left.

Out of the break the Beacons got a layup from Mitchell and then a jumper from Mitchell a little more than two minutes later brought the Beacons within five, 30-25, about three minutes into the second half.  After a Jumbo free throw, Boyd turned in a jumper for the Beacons, and then a jumper from Munroe cut the Tufts lead to two, 31-29, with 16:17 left in the game.

The Jumbos answered with a jumper from Savage and sophomore Carson Cohen followed that with a three and a layup and the free throw after to quickly put the Jumbos ahead by ten again, 39-29, with 14:57 to go.  The Jumbos would dominate the rest of the game, leading by as many as 23 on their way to a 71-49 win.

Brady led the Jumbos with 14 points.  Savage finished with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists.  Cohen, junior Brennan Morris and Thoerner all added eight points each.  Cohen also turned in three rebounds and a couple of assists.  Junior Luke Rogers helped with six points and 18 rebounds.

Boyd led the Beacons with 14 points.  Mitchell added ten points, four rebounds and three assists.  Malik Lorquet led the Beacons with ten rebounds.

The Jumbos take a break for the holiday and are back in action on December 28 in California when they take on La Verne at 6 pm. UMass-Boston plays again on Saturday when they travel to Suffolk for a 1 pm start.
