BOSTON – In the final meet of their regular season, the Tufts University men's swimming & diving team posted several strong times at the Boston Winter Open hosted by Boston University on Friday and Saturday.
Tufts was the lone Division III team at the event. The other teams that participated were the host Terriers, Boston College, Brown and Fairfield, all from Division I.
Freshman Devon French had a good weekend in the fly events. He won an All-Tufts 50 fly in 22.90 seconds and posted a strong second-place mark in the 100 fly (50.30) to go with a fourth-place spot in the 200 fly (1:52.31).
Freshman Ethan Webster in the 200 backstroke (1:50.57) and junior Trevor Serman in the 200 butterfly (1:51.41) had strong swims for the Jumbos. They were both second in their events. Webster added a fast 51.33 in the 100 backstroke for fourth place.
Freshmen Ryan Lynch (2:08.83) and Paul Schwartz (16:36.18) tallied third-place marks in the 200 breaststroke and the 1,650 freestyle, respectively. Lynch compiled a solid weekend overall including a 59.19 in the 100 breaststroke and a 4:15.52 in the 400 individual medley. He was fourth in both races.
Senior Ross Wood had a trio of strong freestyle sprints with a 21.29 in the 50, a 47.24 in the 100 and a 1:42.48 in the 200.
Austin Pruitt competed in the one-meter diving event where he recorded 269.02 points.
The Jumbos swam several time trials at the meet. The 400 freestyle relay of freshman Jack Freeman, Wood, senior Adon Shapiro and sophomore Noah Zhang put together a 3:10.71 mark. The 200 free relay foursome of Shapiro, senior Brian Honicky, Wood and senior tri-captain Chris Simotas posted a 1:26.85 mark. Lynch swam 1:57.00 in the 200 IM time trial.
The Jumbos will next compete at the NESCAC Championships starting February 22 at Middlebury College.
