WORCESTER – The Tufts University men's rowing first varsity eight placed fifth in the grand final at the New England Rowing Championships (NERC) Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond. It's the highest finish for the Jumbos in this event at the NERC since 1992.
Tufts' 1V8 won its five-team heat with a 5:57.518 time, edging UMass by fractions of a second at the finish line. Boston College was also close behind. The Jumbos then timed 6:12.295 in the grand final, close behind fourth-place Trinity (6:12.100). This marked the third straight year that Tufts rowed in the grand final at the NERC.
The Jumbo first varsity eight line-up at NERC had coxswain James Grant, stroke Rick Boer, 7 Mats Edwards, 6 Ryan Bell, 5 Alex Williams, 4 Jordan Bacher, 3 Harris Hardiman-Mostow, 2 James Miller and bow Nick Hartman.
Tufts' second and third varsity eights both won their petite finals. The 2V8 had been third in their heat with a 6:16.624 race. In a six-team petite final, Tufts out-rowed Trinity with a 6:33.878 time to 6:34.947 by the Bantams. For the 3V8, Tufts recorded a 5:06.499 in a time trial for seventh and then won the petite final in 6:32.525.
The Jumbos' second varsity line-up was coxswain Tara Curran, stroke Henry Ross, 7 Matt Agurcia, 6 Rich Gilland, 5 Isaac Mudge, 4 Mitch Koganski, 3 Ted Midthun, 2 Alec Whipple and bow Samson Braun.
For the third varsity on Saturday, coxswain Nilay Maity, stroke Matias Facciuto, 7 Ethan Donnelly, 6 Peter Malinovsky, 5 Paul Gelhaus, 4 Malcolm Zuckerman, 3 Dave Gantt, 2 Tamas Takata and bow Aidan Bauer were the team.
In the Team Point Trophy standings, Tufts was seventh with a 47.40 score.
Tufts returns to Lake Quinsigamond a week from Sunday for the National Invitational Rowing Championships, which includes the NESCAC Championship.
