Three Different Jumbos Tally Goals as Women's Soccer Downs Colby, 3-1

Box Score
Senior Captain Izzy Moore tallied her first goal of the season.

MEDFORD - The Tufts University women's soccer team returned to NESCAC action today and defeated Colby College, 3-1, at home on Kraft Field. Izzy Moore, Madeleine Pero and Liz Reed scored the goals.

With the win, the Jumbos improved to 5-1-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in NESCAC play. With the loss, the Mules fall to 2-2-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in NESCAC play.

Senior midfielder Izzy Moore got the scoring started for the Jumbos as she found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 17th minute. A Colby College yellow card gave Moore the opportunity to break the 0-0 tie in the first.

The Mules quickly responded to the Jumbo opportunity just 1:32 later on a strike from junior forward Sofia Oliveira to even the score at 1-1.

In a matter of 24 seconds, on a helper from Reed, the Jumbos tallied a second goal off the foot of midfielder Madeleine Pero to regain the lead at 2-1.

The Tufts offensive rush had begun early in the game as juniors Sophie Lloyd and Reed both found opportunities to fire shots on the net. Reed's shot deflected off the right post and Lloyd was able to control the rebound, but her shot was then corralled by the Colby goalkeeper Dani Lonati. After multiple corner kicks, scoring chances and a strong defensive effort, the Jumbos entered halftime with the 2-1 lead over Colby.

In the second half, the Jumbos extended their lead to 3-1 thanks to a strike from Reed, on an assist from Lloyd at the 56:38 mark of the game. Reed now leads the NESCAC in goals with six on the season, while Lloyd is at the top of the conference with six assists so far.

Following the third Tufts goal, the Jumbo offense was able to produce quite a few more opportunities to find the back of the net. Junior back Rachel Brown placed a great ball over the Colby defense to set up Reed for a shot that was turned away by the goalkeeper. Later in the half, Pero fired a strike off the crossbar that freshman Margaux Ameer was able to handle and bury into the net. However, the tally was waved off due to an offsides foul.

Tufts' allowed just five total shots on goal. Jumbo keeper Hayley Bernstein moves to 5-1-0 on the season as she made two saves in the contest. The Mules split time between goalkeepers senior captain Lonati and junior Shannon Gray. The duo combined for 12 saves on Tufts' fifteen shots on goal. Lonati had seven in the first half.

The Jumbos had eight corner kick opportunities throughout the contest, while the Mules were held to only one which came in late in the second half.

The Jumbos return to non-conference action on Tuesday when they travel to MIT at 4:00 pm. Colby is at Wesleyan (Conn.) tomorrow at 11 am.
