Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN – Junior Georgia Lord scored in the 76th minute to break a 1-1 tie and give the defending NCAA champion Williams College women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Tufts University in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon.
Tufts, ranked #22 in the United Soccer Coaches pre-season poll, had just tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by junior Liz Reed. However, less than two minutes later, junior Aspen Pierson of #1 ranked Williams sent a cross to Lord who trapped the ball in the center of the box and sent it into the back of the net for the eventual game-winner.
The Ephs, who improved to 2-0 overall and in NESCAC, won despite being out-shot by Tufts 24-9. Tufts also had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Williams goalie Whitney Lincoln recorded eight saves, including five in a scoreless first half.
The scoring started shortly after the start of the second half. In the 47th minute, Lord, coming down the right flank, crossed the ball into the box. Tufts freshman goalkeeper Hayley Bernstein knocked the ball out of the air, then Eph sophomore Rain Condie won the battle for the rebound and scored making it 1-0 Williams.
Tufts would go on to out-shoot Williams 17-7 in the second half, including one by sophomore Izzy Moore that hit the crossbar and a few other near-misses. Then in the 74th minute, Tufts' Reed put the ball into the right side of the net from the left side of the box, after receiving a pass from classmate Sophie Lloyd, tying the game 1-1. The goal is Reed's third of the year in two games.
Not long after starting play again at the half-field line, the Ephs fired back with the winning goal from Lord off of a cross from Pierson.
Bernstein finished with four saves in the Tufts net.
The Jumbos return to action on Tuesday at Kraft Field when they host a non-league game versus Lasell. The Ephs are next at Wesleyan on Saturday at noon.
