AMHERST - Despite a battle the Tufts University women's squash team was handed a 7-2 loss by NESCAC host Amherst College on Friday evening.
It was a competitive match up from the start with four of the first five matches being decided in five sets, but ultimately the 15th-ranked Mammoths improved their record to 8-3 while the #19 Jumbos fell to a 5-5 record on the season.
The Jumbos' two wins came in the fourth and ninth spots. Sophomore Megan Chen posted a victory at #4 (11-13,11-1,11-8,12-14,11-6) after a five set battle with with Amherst's Caroline Conway. Junior Rachel Weindreich's win in the ninth slot came in three sets and consistent scores of 11-7, 11-7, 11-7.
Three five set matches were won by Amherst at #1, #2 and #5. Daksha Pathak defeated senior co-captain Clair Davidson 10-12,11-6,11-6,7-11,11-5 in the first position. Freshman Isabella Schneider fell 9-11,11-7,9-11,11-3,11-4 in the second position and sophomore Diya Sanghi dropped the final five set match of the day in the fifth position with tight scores of 7-11,8-11,11-3,13-11,11-8.
Senior captain Catherine Shanahan saw the only four set match of the day in the #2 spot, while junior Chloe Kantor, sophomore Natalie Bartlett and junior Radhika Joshi were defeated in three sets in the #6, #8, and #9 positions, respectively.
The Jumbos are excited to host Connecticut College tomorrow at 2:00pm in their brand new home facility. Amherst will face both Wesleyan University and Williams College at home on Sunday.
