NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Tufts University women's squash team completed play in the College Squash Association Team Championships on Sunday with a win over Wesleyan University, 8-1, in the Walker Cup Division playoff match for third place.
The Jumbos finish the season with a 10-11 overall record and a 3-0 record versus Wesleyan this season. The Cardinals have a 13-10 record after the loss.
Senior co-captain Catherine Shanahan defeated Josephine Russ in the third position with competitive scores of 9-11, 14-12, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8. In the only other five game battle, junior Rachel Windreich was down two games in the sixth slot to Nina Premutico but refused to give up as she won the next three games 11-9, 11-8, 11-4. Sophomore Megan Chen was also down early after a dropping the first game 9-11 to Valeria Osorio in the fourth position. Fortunately, Chen would take the following three games with scores of 11-6, 11-8, 13-11 to secure a four game victory for the Jumbos.
Freshman Isa Schneider and junior Chloe Kantor also picked up wins for Tufts after being pushed into extra games. Scheider faced Wesleyan's Ananya Vir in the second position and after a competitive match posted scores of 11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7. Kantor at #7 squared up against Sofia Melian-Morse for the first time this season and earned another point for the Jumbos with her four game victory (11-4, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6). Sophomores Diya Sanghi in the fifth position and Natalie Bartlett in the eighth slot had strong performances in their three game victories. Sanghi defeated Natasha Feenstra 11-6, 13-11, 11-9 and Bartlett posted scores of 11-7, 12-10, 11-7. In the most decisive victory of the day, freshman Abhilasha Bhasin swept Annie Roach 11-6, 11-4, 11-7 in the ninth position.
Senior co-captain Claire Davidson fell to Wesleyan junior Aditi Prasad in the first position for the Cardinals lone win on the day. Davidson opened up with a 11-9 win in the first game, but unfortunately could not hold on as Prasad would take the next three games 11-9, 11-1, 13-11.
The Jumbos finish the season as the No. 19 ranked team after today's win while Wesleyan will finish as the No. 20 ranked team.
