SPRINGFIELD – Tufts University freshman Zach Lawrence earned his second seventh-place finish of the weekend in Saturday's one-meter diving competition at the 2020 NCAA Division III Region 3 (Northeast) Championships hosted by Springfield College.
Lawrence finished with a 438.55 total score to place seventh of 19 competitors. He had also been seventh in Friday's three-meter event at the Regional with a 451.15 score. The seventh-place finish today was only slightly off what was needed for Lawrence to get a berth into the NCAA Championships field. His one-meter score today was 15 points better than his 423.60 mark which placed fourth at the NESCAC meet last weekend.
Classmate Kai Renshaw recorded a 404.90 score in the one-meter event on Saturday to place 12th. That was an improvement upon his 14th-place showing in Friday's three-meter diving (398.40). Renshaw's one-meter score today was well above the 341.05 that he achieved at the conference meet for eighth place.
Lawrence's two best dives on Saturday were the forward 2 ½ somersault pike (his sixth) and the inward 1 ½ somersault pike (his 10th) where he totaled scores of 50.70 and 46.80, respectively. Renshaw scored 48.10 in a forward 2 ½ somersault pike sixth dive and a 48.00 score with his ninth dive, an inward 1 ½ somersault pike.
Host Springfield College's Connor Pennington swept the NCAA Regional Diving championships, placing first in one-meter today with 519.45 score.
