Aroh's Golden Goal Lifts Men's Soccer Over Rival Amherst

Box Score

Calvin Aroh MEDFORD - On Senior Day, Calvin Aroh secured Tufts a massive victory with a golden goal in the final two minutes of overtime against the rival Amherst Mammoths. The Jumbos beat Amherst 2-1 in a high-level rivalry match between the 3rd- (Tufts) and 12th- (Amherst) ranked teams in the nation.

Tufts played against the wind in the first half and that weather took its effect as they had difficulty mustering any offense as they finished the half with one shot. The Mammoths, however, controlled possession early and put the Jumbos on their back heel, something rarely seen. Amherst capitalized in the 27th minute on an unassisted goal off a corner from forward Kyle Kelly, after the ball took a slight deflection off a defender.

The Jumbos rallied back and defended well for the rest of the half, but they had no luck breaking down the Amherst defense since they couldn't connect their passes and were clearly hindered by the wind and the pressure from the Mammoths.

The Jumbos looked like a completely different team in the second half where they took back control of the game and scored the tying goal. Senior forward Mati Cano used his blistering pace to disrupt the Amherst back line. After some great attacking action where Ian Daly took a beautiful shot that hit the left post, the Jumbos saw their chance to get back into the game. In the 58th minute, midfielder Woovin Shin won the ball at the top of his team's box and sent a through ball to Cano who ran by both the defenders marking him and found himself in a position to shoot on goal with his right foot and find the back of the net to tie the game in the 59th minute.

From that point on, both teams struggled to get clear-cut chances and the game seemed destined for overtime. The first overtime went by quickly, as neither team could end the game on a golden goal. After 10 minutes of hard-fought play, the game went to a second overtime where in the last two minutes, the Jumbos had an opportunity to win the game on a free kick from outside the box. Travis Van Brewer sent in a great ball to the leaping head of Aroh, who stepped up in another big moment and willed the ball into the goal. The Jumbos' bench rushed the field, and the coaches shook hands in what might be the game of the season so far.

Aroh, Cano and Van Brewer were among 11 Jumbos honored in a pre-game ceremony.

The Jumbos finished with nine shots,10 corners and 21 fouls, while the Mammoths had 10 shots, six corners, and 10 fouls. Eric Lauta stopped three shots in the Jumbo goal and Amherst's Kofi Hope-Gund made two saves.

Tufts plays Connecticut College on October 23rd, and Amherst faces Worcester Polytechnic Institute on the 20th. The two teams could see each other again in an anticipated playoff matchup.
