Amherst Scores in OT to Get Past Women's Soccer 2-1

Box Score

Margaux Ameer MEDFORD - The Tufts women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss against the 16th-ranked Amherst Mammoths in NESCAC play on a windy Saturday afternoon at Bello Field.

Just two minutes into the first overtime a foul by Tufts set up Amherst's Alexa Juarez for a free kick inside the box. She kicked the ball into the lower left corner of the net for a 2-1 final. The Jumbos are 5-6-0 on the season and 3-5-0 in the NESCAC conference, while Amherst has a 10-1-1 record on the season and a 6-1-1 conference record.

Early on, both teams had good looks in the first half despite no goals being scored. The Mammoths had the first shot when a header by Carter Hollingsworth went just off the top crossbar six minutes into the game. The Jumbos would counter with a shot of their own by Liz Reed at seven minutes which sailed left of the goal. Tufts goalie Kaelin Logue had an amazing save when the Mammoths' Natalie Landau secured a loose ball and was one-on-one with the goalie. Logue caught the shot in the middle of the net to keep the game scoreless.

The battle continued as Jumbo Maddie Pero took a shot which went just wide at the 17th minute and Juarez of Amherst saw her own shot also go wide of the net. Kylie Metcalf of the Jumbos had another good opportunity in the 29th minute which was stopped by the Amherst goalie Mika Fisher. Reed had an opportunity with less than a minute left in the first period which sailed over the goal on the left side. Shots were 5-4 Tufts at intermission.

The Jumbos continued to attack at the start of the second half when a ball off the foot of Stephanie DiLeo grazed the right post and deflected wide. Tufts broke through and scored in the 53rd minute when Margaux Ameer fed Reed a good ball which she headed over the goalie into the back of the net. The goal was the ninth of the season for Reed,

However, the Mammoths responded 12 minutes later with a goal of their own in the 65th minute to tie the score at 1-1. Logue dove to stop a shot by Landau, but the ball rolled away from her to Patience Kum who buried it in the back of the net. The score would stay knotted at 1-1 to the end of regulation.

Shots finished 15-10 in favor of Tufts while corners were even at three each. Logue stopped four shots in the Jumbo net while Fisher made two saves.

The Jumbos will play again against the University of Massachusetts Boston on Tuesday at 6:30pm at Bello Field. The Mammoths will play their next game against New England College tomorrow.
