McCluskey Scores Twice for 2-0 Field Hockey Win at UNE

Box Score

Reegan McCluskey BIDDEFORD, Maine - Junior Reegan McCluskey (pictured) scored twice to lead the third-ranked Tufts University field hockey team to a 2-0 victory at the University of New England on Thursday evening.

Nor'Easters junior goalie Lindsay Pych kept the hosts in the game making 13 saves, including seven in the second quarter. The Jumbos (11-2) recorded their fourth consecutive shutout and sixth in eight October games. Senior Andie Stallman played the first half and made one save, while junior Sam Gibby played the second half and did not have to make a save.

The game had gone to halftime tied at 0-0 due to Pych's play. After making two saves in the first quarter - including swatting away an attempt by Jumbo freshman Kylie Rosenquest with her left blocker - Pych was outstanding in the second period. Tufts had 10 shots and six corners in the frame, but could not score.

UNE had a great opportunity to score the first goal of the game early in the second though when Lindsay Bruns earned a corner. Off the insert by Kate Lindmark, a shot by Julia Steeves was saved by Stallman. The Nor'Easters got the ball back to Lindmark at the left post, but she couldn't sweep it in.

In addition to Pych's seven second-period saves, Lindmark also had two defensive saves for the hosts in the frame. Of four excellent stops by Pych in the quarter, perhaps the best was when she dove right to stop an attempt by Jumbo senior Gillian Roeca with a bit more than four minutes left.

Tufts finally broke through in a very familiar way as McCluskey scored off a corner insert from Melissa Manzello 3:14 into the third quarter. McCluskey's second of the game and seventh of the season came with 6:21 on the fourth-quarter clock on a penalty stroke earned during a Jumbo corner.

UNE had a final chance to end Tufts' shutout streak when they earned a corner with 12 seconds left in regulation. However, Tufts' Marin Waddington blocked the shot by Steeves.

The final stats had Tufts ahead 22-2 in shots and 14-2 in corners.

Tufts' game against Connecticut College originally scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Monday (6 pm) so that the team can attend the funeral services for Madie Nicpon, the Tufts junior who passed away unexpectedly on October 17. The Jumbos were wearing patches in memory of Nicpon this evening.

The Nor'Easters (9-6) are idle until hosting Nichols on October 30.
