Women's Soccer Wins Regular-Season Finale at Bowdoin 4-3

Box Score

Maddie Pero BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Tufts Jumbos women's soccer team beat the Bowdoin Polar Bears 4-3 in a strong finish to the regular-season for the team on Tuesday. A back-and-forth game ended with seven different players finding the net, four from Tufts and three from Bowdoin.

Stephanie DiLeo of the Jumbos scored her fifth goal of the season just 10 minutes into the first half. Her unassisted shot gave the Jumbos an early 1-0 lead. DiLeo faced down the Bowdoin keeper and faked one way before depositing the ball the opposite. Maddie Pero (pictured) set up Tufts' second goal six minutes later, controlling the ball at the right post and dishing left for Margaux Ameer to score on the opposite side.

Bowdoin cut the lead in half as Julia Adelmann dished up a feed from the right side to Lynn Farquhar outside the box on the left. Farquhar lofted a perfect ball over the outstretched hand of Kaelin Logue.

The second half saw the Polar Bears come out with a more aggressive approach which resulted in a goal at the 52nd minute. A corner by Samaya Bernardo was redirected by Tess Huckaby into the back of the net tying the game at 2-2.

Nic Sommers, the current NESCAC Player of the Week, gave the Jumbos back the lead at the 65th minute. A corner kick by Lily Sykes rattled around the front of the net before finding Sommer's foot and she buried the shot in the middle of the goal.

Tufts got an important insurance goal when a shot by Claire Wilkinson from inside the circle was tipped by Pero into the right corner of the net with under eight minutes remaining in regulation for a 4-2 advantage. Bowdoin again came back less than three minutes later when Bernardo scored to pull the hosts within 4-3.

The first period had seen 18 total shots on goal split evenly between the Jumbos and Polar Bears at nine apiece. The Jumbos started strong with the first four shots on goal to open the game. DiLeo had a shot sail wide at three minutes while Liz Reed had her shot saved by Bowdoin goalie Penny Rocchio. Ameer and Pero had shots of their own at the fifth and sixth minutes which went wide and high, respectively. Bowdoin would respond with two shots by Adelmann in the eighth minute and one by Rachael Peacock just 40 seconds later. The back-and-forth battle of shots ended with a 2-1 lead for the Jumbos at halftime.

The Polar Bears claimed the first four shots of the second half before Sommers started the offense for the Jumbos with a shot that sailed high in the 60th minute. An impressive combined block by Tookie Wilson and Logue prevented Bernardo from scoring on a breakaway at the 55th minute. A diving save by Rocchio in the 63rd minute kept the game close. Logue also made a diving save, but the ball trickled away leaving a wide open net for Bernardo. Three Tufts defenders came back to deflect the ball and block the easy goal. Huckaby had her shot blocked with a little over a minute left in the second half to secure a 4-3 victory for the Jumbos.

Shots finished 20-19 in favor of Tufts (8-6, 5-5 NESCAC), while Bowdoin (8-6-1, 3-6-1) had a large 13-4 final count in corners. Logue's 11 saves were more than double any previous game total she's had in her career. Rocchio made nine stops for the hosts.

This win, Tufts' third straight, followed up a dramatic 2-1 overtime win at Connecticut College on Sunday in which the Jumbos scored in the 88th minute to tie the score. They are guaranteed to finish in sixth place after this victory with Bowdoin landing in seventh place. The quarterfinals will take place this coming Saturday, October 30th. Tufts will travel to either Amherst or Hamilton on Saturday.
