MEDFORD – The Tufts University women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss against the Hamilton College Continentals on Sunday at Bello Field in a meeting of top 25 NESCAC teams.
The Hamilton goal came in the 41st minute when junior forward Ashlyn Gaulin received a pass from freshman Olivia Zubarik in front of the net and put it past Jumbos' goalie Kaelin Logue.
Tufts seemed to dominate the possession time throughout the game, creating more opportunities to score than Hamilton, including two first-half goals that were called back for offsides. Jumbo junior midfielder Margaux Ameer (pictured) was involved with many of the Tufts scoring chances early in the game as she was sending many good balls into the box as well as taking multiple shots that would just miss, including the Jumbos' first scoring chance just four minutes into the game where she sent a shot just high. Another great chance in the first half for the Jumbos came when freshman defender Jordan Cushner sent a cross into the box that found the foot of junior Maddie Pero, but the shot sailed just wide.
Hamilton had limited scoring opportunities, but took advantage of them, as they answered back with the goal from Gaulin off a corner kick by Zubarik just before the half. This was one of just three shots in the half for Hamilton, but they would still go into halftime with the 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Jumbos would once again possess the ball much more than Hamilton and were putting shots on net often. The Continentals' defense and goalkeeping kept them in the game and made some crucial plays throughout the second half. Tufts had a great opportunity in the 68th minute when Liz Reed sent a corner kick right to the head of Lily Sykes. The header sailed just high of the goal and the outstretched arm of Hamilton goalie Caity Smith.
As time started to dwindle away, the intensity picked up for Tufts. They were setting up great shots and opportunities, but could not find the back of the net. A great chance presented itself in the 72nd minute when the Jumbos had a free kick just outside the box. Sykes sent a rocket of a shot towards the right side of the goal, but it was saved by a diving Smith. Tufts had their best opportunity of the game just five minutes later when Reed dribbled the ball up the field and took a shot from a distance and rifled it on goal. The ball slammed off the crossbar and into the middle of the box where it bounced around, but there were no Jumbos there to collect the rebound and Hamilton cleared it.
Tufts (5-3, 3-2 NESCAC) ended the day with 19 shots compared to just six shots by Hamilton (7-0-2, 5-0-2), two of which were on net. Tufts also had a commanding lead in corner kicks as the Jumbos finished with eight and the Continentals would only get one, which resulted in the goal. Smith had four saves for Hamilton while Logue had one that came in the first half.
The Jumbos will travel to Trinity next Saturday, October 9 at 12 PM and Hamilton will host Bowdoin on that same day at 11 AM.
