Field Hockey Comes Back for 2-1 NESCAC Quarterfinal Win Over Hamilton

Box Score

MEDFORD – Senior Gillian Roeca scored three minutes into overtime as the third-ranked Tufts field hockey team overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to win 2-1 against Hamilton College in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC Tournament on Saturday.

Tufts' game-winning goal was initiated by Beth Krikorian, who stole the ball just outside the Hamilton 25-yard line. Moments later she dribbled into the top left of the circle, and with a defender on her turned and launched a back-handed shot on which Roeca leapt and tipped into the far right corner of the cage.

The Jumbos had been trailing 1-0 with just six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. They scored to tie it on a corner, with the insert by Melissa Manzello to Krikorian, who passed right to Reegan McCluskey. She sent the ball into the middle of the goal area for freshman Rachel Scrivanich who directed it through the legs of Hamilton goalie Maggie Reville with 5:54 on the fourth-quarter clock.

Reville was outstanding for the visitors most of the afternoon, finishing with 14 saves. She had 10 saves in the second half when Tufts attempted 14 shots and earned nine corners.

Hamilton, the seventh seed in the tournament, came out and won the first half both in possession and on the scoreboard. They had advantages of 10-7 in shots and 5-2 in corners for the first 30 minutes. Still, Tufts nearly went ahead 1-0 on a shot by Roeca in the first quarter, but Continental Maeve Eskandari made a defensive save.

In the second quarter, after a Tufts pass from freshman Kylie Rosenquest skipped over the stick of senior Claire Foley out front, the Continentals came down and scored. A shot by Lexi Takashima was saved by Jumbo goalie Andie Stallman, but the rebound went to a wide-open Alana King on the left side and she converted with 8:33 to play until halftime.

After Reville made a pair of saves on Tufts corners with four minutes remaining in the half, the Continentals earned three consecutive corners at the end of the second period. However, Tufts was able to defend them well with a pair of blocked shots on two of the opportunities.

Reville was at her best in the third quarter making seven saves as Tufts mounted up seven penalty corner chances. As the game moved into the fourth, the Jumbos were whistled for a green card and Continental Tracey Stafford immediately made a rush at the net with a shot that Tufts goalie Sam Gibby smothered. Gibby later made a save on a Keeley Duran shot during a corner.

As the potential for an upset grew with each moment, Tufts scored on their 11th and final corner of the afternoon to ultimately send the game to overtime.

The entertaining contest saw Tufts finish with a 22-13 advantage in shots and 11-6 in corners. Stallman started and made five saves for the Jumbos, while Gibby came on and stopped two shots while earning the victory.

The Jumbos (13-3) advance to the conference semifinals next Saturday at Middlebury. Their opponent is still to be determined. Hamilton (10-6) likely saw its season come to a close.
