Men's Soccer Shuts Out Bantams and Continues Unbeaten Streak

Box Score

Ian Daly HARTFORD - The Tufts University men's soccer team (9-0-1, 5-0-1 NESCAC) rallied in the second half to win their ninth game of the season, a 3-0 victory against their NESCAC opponents Trinity College (2-8, 0-6 NESCAC). Trinity stays winless in NESCAC competition, while the Jumbos stay undefeated. With this victory, Tufts overtakes Connecticut College to become the number-one ranked team in the NESCAC.

After a slow first half, the Jumbo offense came alive, scoring three goals within a five-minute span to shut out the Bantams. The first goal was by midfielder Travis Van Brewer at 70:27 with an assist by Ian Daly, the second by Daly at 74:51, and the third by forward Mikey Brady at 75:22. Brady had another successful shot on goal, but it was called back for offsides.

Trinity and Tufts split field position across the first half, a strong back-and-forth effort between both of these NESCAC teams. The first Jumbo shot of the game came off the foot of senior Mati Cano at 13:59, which sailed wide. Soon after, Trinity freshman Rasheed Seriah had an open look around the 15-minute mark, but the ball forked around the right goalpost just wide.

The Jumbos managed to get the ball in the box, with Zach Seigelstein racing for the goal, but the Trinity goalie Bernardo Semoes was able to pounce on it. In the last two minutes of the first half, Seigelstein had another solid strike from outside of the box that sailed high.

The typically dominant Tufts offense was kept scoreless at the half.

Into the second half, the Jumbos managed to get into the six-yard box in the 55th minute of play, following a corner kick, before Trinity returned the ball to their side of the field. Trinity's Rasheed Sarieh fired a shot towards the Jumbo goal, but Tufts goalie Erik Lauta soared through the air to deflect the ball and keep the game scoreless in the 57th minute. Just seconds after, the Bantams were unable to convert off of a header by freshman Nicholas Bellak, which sailed high over the crossbar.

In the final 20 minutes of the second half, the Jumbo offense roared to life. After struggling to accumulate shots on goal, the Jumbos turned up the heat, scoring three goals within five minutes.

The Jumbos scored their first goal of the game off the foot of graduate student Travis Van Brewer at the 70-minute mark, scoring on the rebound after the Trinity goalie Semoes managed to block Tufts senior Ian Daly's shot on the goal. Semoes' block deflected off of his hands, and the ready Van Brewer was able to get the Jumbos on the board with a goal in the six-yard box to put the Jumbos up 1-0.

Four minutes later, Daly, whose shot was blocked to set up Van Brewer's goal, was ready in the box to rifle the ball into the back of the net to put the Jumbos up 2-0, his third for the season.

The Jumbo offense kept up their championship-level aggression to go up 3-0 just 31 seconds after the last score. Tufts sophomore Mikey Brady cut into the right side of the box and fired off a soaring strike for his second goal of the year.

The Jumbo goalie Lauda was 4-4 on saves, amassing two saves in the last 15 minutes of the game, first diving to push the ball out and then stopping a header off of Trinity freshman Luka de Faria e Castro to keep Trinity scoreless, before being substituted out for Jacob Totz in the last seven minutes of the game.

In the last seconds of the game, Trinity forward Faria e Castro attempted to break Trinity's nine-year shutout streak against Tufts, but the ball ricocheted off the crossbar as Trinity lost their eighth consecutive shutout game against the Jumbos.

Tufts had six shots to Trinity's eight, and the teams were even at four apiece on shots on goal, with only one successful save for Trinity.

The Jumbos will attempt to continue their unbeaten streak at Middlebury College tomorrow at 2:30, while Trinity will try for their first NESCAC win of the season on Tuesday versus Connecticut College.
