Box Score
HARTFORD - The Tufts University Jumbos women's soccer team (5-4. 3-3 NESCAC) fell to the Trinity College Bantams at the Trinity Soccer Field on Saturday, a 1-0 loss to one of the Jumbos' NESCAC rivals. This is the second consecutive 1-0 loss for the Jumbos, who fell 1-0 to Hamilton last Sunday. Both teams displayed a strong defensive effort, but the Bantams were able to escape with a victory.
The lone goal of the game was scored in the 25th minute of the first half. Trinity junior Hannah Storozuk fired off a sharp shot from the right wing of the box to the left side of the net to put the Bantams up 1-0 over the Jumbos. Storozuk's goal was the Bantams' first score since their September 29th victory against Union College, having been shut out against both Bowdoin College and Bates College in their previous two games.
Tufts established solid field position in the first few minutes of the game, but the stout Trinity defense managed to keep them away. The first half of this NESCAC match was dominated by Trinity, who maintained possession and field position for the majority of the half.
Following Storozuk's goal at 25:42, a foul on Tufts gave Trinity a chance to score again. Storozuk's penalty kick sailed high, and the Jumbos were soon able to reestablish field position around the 35-minute mark. Tufts sophomore Casey Lam (pictured) had just the third shot of the game for the Jumbos, but it was blocked by Trinity defender Molly Broderick. The first corner kick of the game for either team occurred during the last two minutes of the first half, off the foot of Tufts senior Lily Sykes, but the Jumbos were unable to capitalize and finished the half down 1-0 to the Bantams.
Tufts dominated field position and possession in the second half. The Jumbos began the second half far more aggressively following an early corner kick from Tufts senior Kylie Metcalf, with the ball nearly seeing net, but the Trinity defense was able to keep it away.
The Jumbos had two very close shots in the second half. Tufts senior Melina McDevitt had a shot that was blocked and quickly regained by the Jumbos around the 66-minute mark, with McDevitt just seconds later firing off a shot in the six-yard box that bounced off the top crossbar. Tufts sophomore Thalia Greenberg nearly tied the game for the Jumbos off of a strong strike from outside of the box at 73:29, but it ricocheted off the left crossbar.
Tufts maintained their strong field position for the majority of the second half, but in the waning minutes of the match, Trinity was able to keep Tufts away from the goal, and closed the game with a 1-0 Bantams victory.
Tufts and Trinity ended the game with seven shots and two shots on goal each. Tufts had three corner kicks to Trinity's two, and one foul to Trinity's five.
The Jumbos will travel up to Middlebury tomorrow for a 12:00 game, while the Bantams will travel to Wesleyan on Tuesday for their next contest.
