Men's Basketball Falls to St. Joseph in Connecticut

Box Score

MEDFORD – The Tufts University men's basketball team's comeback fell short in their 75-62 loss at St. Josephs (Conn.) on Saturday at the O'Connell Center in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Tufts sophomore Jay Dieterle and St. Joseph senior Jordan Powell led the game with 18 points scored. Dieterle's came on 6 for 11 shooting from the field, going 2 for 6 from three-point range and 4 for 5 from the free throw line. Powell shot 8 for 11 from the field and 2 for 2 from the line.

St. Joseph went up 7-0 early in the game after Powell opened the game with a layup, followed by a Ryan O'Neill jump shot and a Tyree Mitchell three-pointer. After a dunk from Tufts freshman Trumann Gettings to make the score 7-2, the Blue Jays went on another run, this time a 9-0 stretch to make the score 16-2 just over six minutes into the game.

Tufts mounted a comeback later in the half, responding to a 20-4 deficit with a 21-12 run in the final 10 minutes of the half to make the score 32-28 at halftime. The run was ignited by a Carson Cohen (pictured) three-pointer. Cohen was a massive part of the run, scoring 10 points in the first half with two rebounds and two assists. Will Brady came off the bench for five points in the half.

The two teams would trade baskets to start off the second half as Gettings started off the half with a jump shot to put the Jumbos within two. The Blue Jays continued to stop any momentum that Tufts seemed to get going and took an eight-point lead on another Mitchell three-pointer with 9:31 left in the second half.

Tufts responded with two three-pointers from Dieterle and graduate student Brennan Morris to make it a two-point game at 53-51. This is when St. Joseph seemed to take control of the game, going on a 13-0 run to make the score 66-51 with 2:28 left. Tufts tried to claw their way back into it, cutting the deficit to nine points on a Dylan Thoerner three-pointer. The Blue Jays halted the comeback though and finished the game out.

Once again, Tufts was without All-American Luke Rogers for the second straight game. Along with Dieterle's 18 points, Cohen finished with 14 with five rebounds, three assists and two steals and Thoerner ended the game with 10 points, two rebounds and a steal, shooting 50-percent (2/4) from three-point range.

Tyree Mitchell finished with 18 points for the hosts, who also received 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals from Jaecee Martin.

Next the Jumbos travel to MIT on Tuesday, November 23 for a 5 PM start.
